Is Brock Purdy still overlooked and underrated among NFL QBs?

Brock Purdy’s first two NFL campaigns have been quite a whirlwind by normal standards. Here’s a kid who went from the last pick in the draft to taking snaps for a Super Bowl-caliber team and leading it there in his second year.

Some would say Purdy has gone from overrated to underrated in a short amount of time. Some believe this to be true as does Pro Football Talk’s Sam Monson. But is there any truth to Purdy being viewed as underrated at this point?

"He started off, and he was being given too much credit. And now, I think he's probably not being given enough credit,” said Monson.

Purdy recently ranked sixth in the top NFL players under 25 list done by The 33rd Team. This wasn’t just ranking QBs, but all players under the age of 25. Only Justin Jefferson, Micah Parsons, Penei Sewell, Sauce Gardner and CeeDee Lamb finished ahead of Purdy.

That’s an exclusive list to be part of, especially for a former Mr. Irrelevant. Of the top six on this list, Purdy is the only player not drafted in the first round. Or the first six rounds for that matter. Of the top 10 players on the list, only Purdy and Amon-Ra St. Brown were drafted outside of the first round. St. Brown was selected in the fourth round by Detroit.

Not too bad for a player drafted 262nd overall two years ago. Last season, Purdy finished fifth in the league in passing with 4,280 yards. He ended the season with 31 touchdown passes, which was good enough for third. Because of that, Purdy finished fourth in MVP voting last season.

The third-year pro ranked higher than Josh Allen, Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes in last year’s MVP vote. While Purdy may be fortunate to play on arguably the best offense combined with one of the most innovative play-callers in the NFL, his improvement in such a short time can’t be downplayed.

Although Kyle Shanahan, Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel do make for quite the supporting cast, Purdy’s swift rise through the ranks is nothing to sneeze at. However, the jury could still be out on the verdict of him still being the most underrated QB in the NFL.
