'He's the same guy everyday': Lions teammate opens up about Jared Goff

During a recent appearance on "The Jim Rome Show," Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta indicated that quarterback Jared Goff hadn't changed one bit after signing a four-year contract extension this offseason that included $170M guaranteed and could be worth up to $212M.

"I say this about Jared frequently, but he’s the same person every day," LaPorta explained via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "You’re not going to find someone more consistent than Jared Goff in our building. And for him to be leading the team, you need to have consistency. You’re going to have good and bad days in the NFL — it’s just the nature of the game and how competitive this league is. But, he shows up every day, he works, and he sets the example and he sets the tone in the building."

As noted by StatMuse, the Lions have won 20 of their last 27 regular-season games, thanks largely to Goff's efforts. The 29-year-old, officially discarded by the Los Angeles Rams in March 2021, is now the undisputed leader of Detroit's offense on and off the field, and LaPorta expanded on all that Goff means to his teammates behind the scenes.

"To be able to follow him and the example he sets for this organization, it just trickles on down from there — really amazing," LaPorta added about Goff. "And I’m so happy for him and his extension and his security here in Detroit for another couple of years."

As star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson pointed out, the days of the Lions flying under the radar are gone until further notice after Detroit was one solid half of football away from facing the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. As of Wednesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Lions second among the betting favorites behind only the San Francisco 49ers (+250) at +550 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIX this coming February.

Judging by LaPorta's comments, it sounds like Goff is once again doing well to ignore any and all outside noise as he prepares to return to work when training camp practices begin later this month.
