The US men's national basketball team has seen its odds soar to new high water marks after handedly beating Canada by 14 points in an exhibition match ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics on Wednesday night.
The U.S. team held up a high-flying Canada team filled with NBA stars — such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray — with the help of exorbitant depth.
As a result of the big win, the U.S. went from -390 favorites to win the gold medal to -500, according to odds from DraftKings. The implied probability on those two figures indicate the U.S. team went from 79.6% odds to win the tournament to odds of 83.3%.
It stands to reason, considering a starting lineup that consists of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Devin Booker and Jrue Holiday. And the second unit is an All-Star team of its own: Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo anchor this group.
Canada's odds, meanwhile, fell from +900 to +1100 as a result of the loss. France also saw its odds move downward — from +1000 to +1400 — on account of the U.S. team's dominance. Serbia — led by three-time MVP Nikola Jokic — had its odds fall from +1300 to +1500.
The odds for the lower-ranked teams didn't move all that much. Greece, while led by former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, has the same +1900 odds as it did before, with the marketplace not confident in the roster construction around the Bucks superstar.
Germany's odds at +3000 are also similar. That team is anchored by the Wagner brothers, Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis.
