Red Sox closer wants to retire with former team

Boston Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen said during a Thursday appearance on the "Foul Territory" podcast that he wants to return to and retire with his original team, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The four-time All-Star admitted that he wasn't optimistic about his dream becoming a reality, however.

"I wanna see myself retiring in Dodger blue, but is it a reality? No. I dunno, because I don't have control over that and also, I don't know what they're thinking. At the end of the day, it's a business, right?" Jansen said. "So, I want to compete, and if teams out there want to compete for a championship, that's what I want to do. I want to chase a championship and whoever wants me on their roster when I'm a free agent and gives the best deal for me and my family, that's where I will go. But also, yes, the Dodgers will have an edge."

After making his big league debut with Los Angeles in July 2010, Jansen spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the organization. Jansen finished seventh in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2011, made three straight All-Star teams from 2016-18 and finished in fifth place in the NL Cy Young race in 2017, leading the senior circuit with 41 saves that season.

The right-hander helped the Dodgers win their first World Series in 32 years in 2020. After the team was eliminated in the 2021 NLCS by the Atlanta Braves, however, Jansen signed a one-year, $16M contract with the enemy in March 2022, months after Atlanta won the Fall Classic.

The Curacao native led the NL in saves with 41 again in 2022 but the Braves were upset by the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS that fall.

Jansen inked a two-year, $32M deal with the Red Sox in December 2022 and was an AL All-Star in 2023.

Jansen is first among active pitchers in games played (848) and second in both saves (438) and games finished (639). He's also fifth all-time in saves, trailing only Hall of Famers Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith, as well as Baltimore Orioles stopper Craig Kimbrel.
