This top free-agent guard would add necessary depth for Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers have retooled their roster this summer. At the start of free agency, they lost Paul George to the Philadelphia 76ers, but they have since pivoted to add Mo Bamba, Nicolas Batum, Derrick Jones Jr. and Kevin Porter Jr.

However, the Clippers are still searching for additional depth at the guard position. According to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, the organization want to add Tyus Jones, who spent this past season with the Washington Wizards.

"Tyus Jones, HoopsHype’s top free agent on the board, is continuing to receive interest as a sign-and-trade candidate from several teams," Scotto hears, "including the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources told HoopsHype."

Jones, 28, is a reliable veteran who has proven capable of being an effective ball-handler while playing within a coach's system. He's the type of guard who approaches the game the right way, often looking to pass before calling his own number on offense. Furthermore, he's a reliable defender who can switch multiple positions and provide pressure at the point of attack.

Russell Westbrook's future with the Clippers would likely come under question if they added Jones. Nevertheless, the Wizards' guard makes far more sense for Ty Lue's team due to his ability to operate off the ball and slot in next to high-usage talent.

The Clippers project to be more balanced following their offseason moves. They are built around James Harden's playmaking and Kawhi Leonard's two-way production. Jones will thrive in a complementary role off the bench. The front office would be wise to firm up their interest in a potential trade. After all, a bench playmaker could be key during a deep playoff run and he would also provide reliable cover for Harden if he's forced to miss games.

Jones isn't the biggest name, nor is he an All-Star addition. He is, however, the type of player every contending team needs.
