Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

In England, A’ja Wilson scored 19 points and collected 14 rebounds for a double-double as she led the USA Basketball Women’s National Team to a resounding 84-57 exhibition win over Germany on Tuesday afternoon.

After she exploded with 31 points against Team WNBA in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game, Breanna Stewart posted 15 points for the U.S. who are set to begin the Olympics in under a week. Sabrina Ionescu, Alyssa Thomas and Jackie Young all had eight points each in the blowout victory.

Luisa Geiselsoder scored 15 points and Leonie Fiebich added 12 for Germany in the loss. Nyara Sabally was just a point short of a double-double, nine points and 10 rebounds.

USA set tone early, never looked back

Right as the game started, the United States commanded control of the pace and tempo and Germany was struggling out of the gate. Getting started with a 22-9 run at the end of the first quarter, Wilson and Loyd both had six points each.

In her first since the 2024 WNBA season started, Satou Sabally started for the Germans and scored eight points. Due to having a procedure on her injured shoulder, the reigning WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year has yet to play this season for the Dallas Wings but is getting back up to game speed.

From the first quarter onward, Germany was only able to close the gap to within nine in the second frame before the U.S. enlarged their lead and didn’t look back. The Germans gave up 17 turnovers, were outrebounded 51-43 and couldn’t connect on most of their 3-point attempts, going 6-for-29 (20.7%) from deep.

Every player besides Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner played. As for her fellow Mercury teammates, Diana Taurasi started and ended with five points while Kahleah Copper came off the bench for two points in six minutes.

After she had zero points in the WNBA All-Star Game as a starter for Team USA, Loyd responded as a substitute by netting 11 vs. Germany.

The U.S. would cruise to victory as they outscored Germany 20-7 in the fourth quarter. The offense for the Germans couldn’t click into a rhythm and the American’s defense shut them down before the final horn.

Team USA finished shooting 30-for-72 (41.7%) from the field and 11-for-26 (42.3%) from three. For the fourth time in their last five encounters with Germany, the U.S. won.

Now that the 117-109 loss to the Team WNBA is in the rearview mirror, Team USA will head to Paris before their first Olympic matchup against Japan. The United States take on Japan on July 29 at noon PT.
