After more than two years on the sidelines, Lonzo Ball aims to break his injury curse and suit up for the Chicago Bulls next season. Chicago initially acquired him to spearhead a potential championship team. His playmaking, perimeter scoring and elite point-of-attack defense made him one of the most exciting young guards in the NBA. Unfortunately for Ball, a persistent knee injury has stolen years of developmental time.
Ball recently appeared on the "What An Experience" podcast and provided an update on his recovery timeline.
"My first real test, I feel would be this August when I play five-on-five for the first time. Full court," Ball said. "I'll have a better update then. But, so far, so good. Everything has been going well. And getting stronger in the weight room. I have no complaints right now."

Ball isn't guaranteed an easy path back into Billy Donovan's rotation. Earlier this summer, Chicago acquired Josh Giddey from the Oklahoma City Thunder, with Alex Caruso heading in the opposite direction. There are a lot of similarities between Ball's offensive game and that of Giddey's. Both are pass-first ball-handlers who can create their own shot when required. And both like to control the tempo of the game.
As such, if Ball can prove he's healthy enough to return to full basketball activities, he will face a battle to regain his starting spot on the roster. Of course, any chance he has of winning back his lead-guard status depends on how quickly he gets his conditioning back up to standard. Multiple years away from the NBA means he's got to put in some tough miles in the coming months.
Right now, Ball is projected to be part of Chicago's season. If he can avoid another injury and prove his health and fitness, he will be another tradable asset for the front office to explore. Nevertheless, there are a lot of steps he must take before he's back on the hardwood and fighting for a rotation place. Playing five-on-five is just another box he needs to tick.
It will be a grueling summer for Ball, and considering he's entering a contract year, he must make it count.
