The New England Patriots' relationship with star edge-rusher Matthew Judon could be on shaky ground ahead of the regular season.
Judon — who is entering the final year of a four-year, $54.5M deal — didn't participate in padded practice Monday and left the field after a tense conversation with rookie head coach Jerod Mayo.

Per NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry, Judon later returned and had an animated discussion with Patriots vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf and director of player personnel Matt Groh. He then walked off of the field again.

What sparked the spats remains unclear. Last offseason, Judon held in at training camp before the Patriots reworked his deal. He recently signaled he's still dissatisfied with his contract.
"Honestly, it's tough going into the last year of the deal," he recently told the media. "You kind of look at everybody around the league and in the building and you see them getting deals done and worked out, and it's tough to not be jealous or envious or something like that. But honestly, I've got to focus on myself."
Judon recorded 13 tackles and four sacks last season but missed 13 games with a torn biceps. The Patriots probably don't want to give a 31-year-old coming off of a significant injury a mega deal.
However, when healthy, four-time Pro Bowler Judon is an elite pass-rusher. In 2022, he logged a career-high 15.5 sacks in 17 games and finished ninth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
The situation between Judon and the franchise is worth monitoring. If the tension escalates, it will create more uncertainty about his future in New England.
