The New York Giants and Detroit Lions generated plenty of headlines when they engaged in multiple skirmishes during joint training-camp practices involving the two clubs on Monday and Tuesday.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy seemed to take a shot at the club's division rival while speaking on Tuesday about Dallas' joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams.
"I know the teams I’ve worked with," McCarthy said about such incidents, per Joseph Hoyt of Lonestar Live. "It’s a waste of time. That’s not toughness; it’s a lack of discipline. We want the work to get to that emotional edge. To push each other, but you have to handle those spots. That’s all part of the emotional challenge in the game of football. I’m not looking for that."
Specifically, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers were directly involved in fights that went viral during New York's joint practices with Detroit. Nabers and Lions safety Kerby Joseph came to blows following a play on Tuesday.
McCarthy noted during his comments that he doesn't expect to see similar fireworks during Thursday's joint practice with the Rams.
"I think like anything in our industry, it’s all calculated on why you do things," McCarthy explained. "I like the way [Rams head coach Sean McVay] runs his program. We talked earlier in the spring about working together."
McCarthy already has plenty to worry about without fearing that a star athlete could injure himself in a training camp fight with an opposing player. The coach remains in the final year of a contract that clearly won't be extended by Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, and rumors have suggested that Jones views former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as McCarthy's eventual replacement.
For now, McCarthy is focusing on ensuring his players behave as they prepare for Sunday's preseason opener at the Rams.
"I know Sean’s not looking for it either," McCarthy added about Cowboys and Rams players possibly fighting. "There’s no concern, but we want to have a hell of a practice. That’s why we’re working together, and I think the work Thursday will be great."
