Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. gets last laugh on 'overrated' label

New York Yankees infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. has responded to June's anonymous poll conducted by The Athletic, where he was picked as the "most overrated" player in MLB.

Though the 26-year-old had some eyebrow-raising words for his critics, he's let his bat do most of the talking, especially since being traded to the Yankees from the Miami Marlins on July 27.

Chisholm has gone 16-for-54 with seven home runs, 11 RBI and four stolen bases over 13 games with New York. He hit home runs in three straight games for the first time in his five MLB campaigns from Thursday to Saturday and is one of only five players with 20 dingers and 25 thefts. The others are AL and NL MVP candidates Bobby Witt Jr. and Shohei Ohtani, respectively, as well as Cleveland Guardians superstar Jose Ramirez and Cincinnati Reds youngster Elly De La Cruz.

According to Fox Sports MLB reporter Deesha Thosar, Chisholm is the first player in Yankees history to record seven home runs in his first 12 contests with the franchise.

He's also been a team player, switching from primarily playing center field and second base to trying a completely different position at third base.

Chisholm's early returns at the hot corner are solid, as Thosar reported that he's made just one error in 12 games at the new post. Chisholm also registered two defensive runs saved and two outs above average across his 107 innings at third.

The native of The Bahamas used his 2022 All-Star campaign to catapult him to superstardom when he was chosen as the "MLB The Show 23" cover athlete.

While it's not known exactly why Chisholm's counterparts chose him as the "most overrated," the video game honor could've had something to do with it.

Chisholm was voted as "most overrated" by 12 of the 59 players, which is 20.3 percent. His total was twice as many as Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon.

The second-place finisher was an All-Star in 2019 and finished third in that year's AL MVP race but has played in just 185 games with the Angels since the 2021 season.
