Robert Griffin III gives Patriots wise advice on Drake Maye, Jacoby Brissett

It was learned on Thursday that ESPN had surprisingly fired former NFL quarterback and current analyst Robert Griffin III. 

Griffin isn't finished breaking action down, as he took to social media on Friday to argue why the New England Patriots should name rookie Drake Maye their Week 1 QB over veteran Jacoby Brissett. 

"The Patriots should start Drake Maye at QB because he gives their offense the playmaking ability it needs," Griffin explained via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "Maye takes stress off the O-line with how he moves within and outside of the pocket, is diagnosing coverage and manipulating safeties well in-game and gives them the best chance to score points to win in a division with three explosive offenses." 

Maye entered Thursday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles trailing Brissett in a competition for the New England starting job that seemed to be over. Brissett then failed to impress against the Eagles, while Maye wowed onlookers with his arm and athleticism as he completed six of 11 passes for 47 yards to go along with 15 rushing yards and a touchdown on four carries. 

First-year head coach Jerod Mayo indicated on both Thursday and Friday that Maye could still win the starting gig before New England plays its final snap of the preseason against the Washington Commanders on Aug. 25. 

"He has to be like Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa, inspiring his team and giving the fans hope," Griffin added about Maye. "We saw glimpses of that against the Eagles. Let him grow through playing and ride the wave with him." 

Earlier this week, Chad Graff of The Athletic mentioned that the New England offense was "in trouble" regarding the upcoming season largely because of a "brutal combination of a bad offensive line and bad wide receivers." On Thursday, Patriots insider Chris Mason of MassLive made it known the team doesn't want to get Maye "pulverized" playing behind poor offensive-line protection. 

The safe move is still for Mayo to start Brissett for the Week 1 matchup at the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 8. Assuming the 2024 Patriots can't compete for much of note with either quarterback in the lineup, there's no harm in letting Maye learn from the sidelines for even a couple of weeks.
