The New York Giants trading back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick signaled the unofficial beginning of the end of Tommy DeVito's time with the franchise.
On Tuesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic shared why DeVito may be stuck with the Giants for at least the next several months even though Big Blue also has veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston on the active roster.
"DeVito should consider requesting his release since there’s no path to a spot on the Giants’ active roster," Duggan explained. "It will be much harder for him to find a viable opportunity to make another team at cut day than it would be now in the early stages of the offseason program. The Giants likely wouldn’t grant that request, however, since he has value as the only quarterback on the roster with experience in the system as they go through the offseason program. DeVito also provides an experienced insurance policy if a QB gets injured."
Last summer, Wilson picked up what became a lingering calf injury while with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That setback prevented the one-time Super Bowl champion from playing before Week 7 of the season.
As for DeVito, he originally joined the Giants as an undrafted rookie in 2023. Later that year, he became somewhat of a cult hero as he won three of his first four career starts. More recently, he went 0-2 as a starter during the 2024 campaign before the Giants reset their quarterback situation via the offseason additions of Wilson, Winston and Dart.
As for Dart's development, general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll have made it known they don't want to rush the 21-year-old into action ahead of schedule. Thus, it's possible New York could hold onto DeVito but listen to trade offers for Winston if a different team loses a starting quarterback to an injury during summer workouts.
"The Giants will likely want to carry DeVito on the practice squad," Duggan added. "We’ll find out if he has any value around the league when he hits waivers after cut day."
DeVito likely will have to wait until preseason games get underway in August to audition for interested clubs. That said, he probably has taken his last meaningful in-game snap as a member of the Giants unless an injury bug infects the team's quarterback room before Week 1 arrives.
