For the second consecutive night, the Washington Nationals found out how good the New York Mets are.
After picking up an extra-inning win on Tuesday, the Mets rode the hot hand of sixth-year pitcher David Peterson, who tossed his first career shutout and led the team to a 5-0 win on Wednesday.

Peterson allowed six hits and recorded six strikeouts in 106 pitches to lower his ERA to 2.49. The Mets scored five runs for the second night in a row, but they only needed the RBI double from first baseman Pete Alonso in the first inning to take control.
If that was not enough, Mets outfielder Juan Soto extended the lead to 3-0 in third inning with a two-run shot, his fifth homer in his last 11 games.

That was followed by a pair of homers from outfielder Brandon Nimmo to add some insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

As for Peterson, Wednesday night's performance continued what has been an up-and-down season for him. While he has given up 22 earned runs this season, his 2.49 ERA is 18th in the league. Peterson's 79.2 innings pitched leads the team, which makes his complete game that much more impressive, given his time spent on the mound in 2025.
It was his first nine-inning complete game since 2017 when he pitched a four-hit shutout for Oregon against Arizona State, per the Associated Press. Peterson's shutout is the seventh shutout and 14th complete game in the major leagues this season.
The Mets (44-24) have won their last five games and scored four or more runs in each game. If they can get this kind of performance on the mound on top of their elite hitting at the plate, it is going to be extremely difficult to slow them down.
