The Sacramento Kings are in a state of flux. Scott Perry has taken over the role of general manager for the franchise and has brought his ideas on how to build the roster.
Sacramento has already signed Dennis Schroder, received Dario Saric via trade and obtained impressive big man Maxime Raynaud in the draft. However, it would appear it is still looking to make further high-level additions, with Russell Westbrook reportedly on its radar.
According to Matt George of "Locked on Kings," Sacramento needs to clear the current logjam at the guard position before adding the former MVP to the rotation. George named Malik Monk and Devin Carter as potential trade chips.
"Both parties have been talking and have had mutual interest since free agency began," George reported via X. "That's been well known. From what I gather, the Kings are still looking to move a player like Devin Carter or Malik Monk before they can bring Westbrook in. The Kings have a log jam at the guard position and very little financial flexibility to work with."
Westbrook spent last season with the Denver Nuggets. He became an unrestricted free agent when he declined his player option with the franchise. By adding Schroder and targeting Westbrook, HC Doug Christie is looking to play a fast-paced, guard-led offense next season. Westbrook would ensure the Kings could sustain a high tempo without Schroder on the floor.
Even at this late stage in his career, Westbrook can still wreak havoc when operating in transition or ripping and running off the rebound. If Christie is willing to give Westbrook a sizable role as the second-string guard, his addition to the roster could make sense. Whether it's worth moving on from Monk, who has been one of the team's better players recently, is debatable.
With new leadership comes new ideas. Westbrook isn't a bad addition under the right circumstances. Whether the veteran guard is willing to wait for Sacramento will be an interesting caveat. After all, he could have other interested teams elsewhere in the NBA.
