Browns HC responds to claims he's sabotaging Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is facing increased scrutiny for his handling of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Stefanski made a questionable call in Cleveland's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday. The coach pulled Sanders and inserted backup QB Tyler Huntley during a two-minute drill late in the fourth quarter.

The decision fueled the narrative that the coach is sabotaging the 23-year-old QB. He insisted that's not the case.

"I'm committed to his development, just like all of our rookies," the coach said Sunday, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. "So, we'll continue to focus on getting all of our guys better. And that's what we'll stay committed to, and that's what's important to me."

If Stefanski is committed to Sanders' development, why didn't he let him run the two-minute drill?

The former Colorado Buffaloes star had been struggling up to that point. He had completed 3-of-6 passes for 14 yards and had been sacked five times for -41 yards.

Still, Stefanski gave reps to a QB the Browns didn't even keep. On Sunday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted that Cleveland released Huntley.

To Huntley's credit, he engineered a 46-yard drive. Cleveland backup kicker Andre Szmyt then nailed a 37-yard field-goal attempt, sealing a 19-17 victory for the Browns.

Even if Huntley gave the Browns a better chance to win, that's not the point of preseason. It's a time to provide rookies with valuable reps that could benefit them later in their careers. In a postgame news conference, Browns starting QB Joe Flacco said he learned from one of these experiences during his rookie season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008.

"I got thrown into a game against New England with two minutes left," the 40-year-old said. "I fumbled on the one-yard line. They scored two plays later, and that was John Harbaugh's first preseason game. He was not happy. I wasn't happy, either. But hey, it's part of the game. It's part of what makes a football player is learning how to deal with those situations and learn from them."

Claiming Stefanski is sabotaging Sanders could be far-fetched. However, it's safe to say the coach must ensure he's doing right by the QB.
