Did Cowboys negotiate with Eagles before trading Micah Parsons to Packers?

A report from Sunday revealed that the Philadelphia Eagles were willing to send the division-rival Dallas Cowboys two first-round draft picks, a third-round choice and a fifth-round selection "among other things" in return for star pass-rusher Micah Parsons before.

Dallas instead traded Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for two first-round picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

During a Tuesday appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was asked if he attempted to get more from the Eagles before Dallas shipped Parsons to Green Bay.

Could Eagles have landed Micah Parsons with a "'Godfather' offer?"

"There was no counteroffer (with Philadelphia)," Jones explained, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. "...The closer we got to trading Micah, the more the phone started ringing."

Parsons went public with a trade request on Aug. 1, and a previous story suggested that he had some interest in featuring for either the Baltimore Ravens or the Kansas City Chiefs. According to that same report, the Cowboys "were focused on getting the best deal they could" for Parsons.

That last line is interesting considering the Cowboys didn't accept the "best deal" offered for Parsons' services. While Dallas understandably didn't want to send Parsons to a fellow NFC East club, Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper pointed out that accepting multiple draft assets from a Philadelphia side that also would've handed Parsons a lucrative deal would have been "damaging to the Eagles' long-term outlook."

As part of acquiring Parsons, Green Bay signed him to a four-year, $188M contract that included $136M guaranteed and made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Did Jerry Jones take a dig at Micah Parsons' back injury?

Parsons didn't practice during training camp amid his contract standoff with the Cowboys as he dealt with a lingering back injury. However, he recorded three pressures and one sack while playing 29 of 65 defensive snaps in Green Bay's 27-13 win over the Detroit Lions this past Sunday.

"Not one thing unexpected for me," Jones said on Tuesday when asked about Parsons' Packers debut, according to Kristen Wong of Sports Illustrated. "From what I saw of him, I thought he was able to get in there and play without having any influence from his back. I say that with a straight face, I do. Having said that, I wish him well."

The Packers and Cowboys will meet at AT&T Stadium for a "Sunday Night Football" clash on Sept. 28. It seems likely Jones and Parsons will have plenty to say in the days leading up to that showdown.
