Jets turned down opportunity to trade for All-Pro DE

The remnants of the Aaron Rodgers era may have cost the New York Jets an opportunity to trade for a player who could have changed the outlook of their season.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Gary Myers of ESPN New York that he talked to the Jets about a trade for defensive end Micah Parsons before he was traded to the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys wanted a defensive tackle like Quinnen Williams and two first-round picks for Parsons, but New York told Jones that it didn't have enough resources to make a deal.

Jones said the talks with the Jets were good but brief because they were in no position to trade.

"A prerequisite to the entire trade was that we had to have, right now, a really, frankly significant, dominant inside defensive player, which was our goal to address the run more than we'd been addressing it the previous four years," Jones said. "We had tried to do it with Mazi Smith when we drafted him two years earlier, but that was a prerequisite, and you didn't get in the mentality of my trading if you didn't have that coming through the door."

New York Jets didn't have the resources

It's unclear if the Jets claimed they didn't have the resources because they were unwilling to trade Williams, a three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle. New York has first-round picks in 2026 and 2027. If the Jets did trade for Parsons, they would have been on the hook for the deal he ultimately reached with the Green Bay Packers at $47M per year.

Parsons would have been a big contributor for new head coach Aaron Glenn and his defense. However, the trade would have limited New York's options in upcoming drafts, something the front office might not have wanted to do since it doesn't have a quarterback signed to a long-term contract.

Justin Fields signed a two-year deal worth $40M in the offseason.

Parsons apparently was a luxury the Jets couldn't afford while they rebuild after going all-in for Rodgers in 2023-2024.
