The Cincinnati Bengals can't catch a break. Quarterback Joe Burrow needs toe surgery and is expected to miss three months.
Even so, head coach Zac Taylor has the utmost confidence in backup QB Jake Browning. When asked about whether they would go after another signal-caller, Taylor confirmed that the team believes in his second-string quarterback.
“I feel very confident in Jake,” Taylor told the media. “I think Jake has proven his caliber in this league and he can help us win football games, and contend for all the things we want to contend for.”
Browning came on in relief of Burrow after exiting in the first half on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 29-year-old was more of a game manager at times, making some crucial mistakes whenever he tried to sling the football down the field. Despite tossing three interceptions, Browning did just enough to secure a 31-27 win over the Jaguars to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Browning has been with the team long enough that he's familiar with the personnel and offense. When Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Week 11 during the 2023 campaign, Browning led the team to a 4-3 record and completed over 70 percent of his passes for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, according to Football Reference.
Of course, Browning is no Burrow, but the Bengals are still stacked on offense with wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins and running back Chase Brown. Browning and Co. must hold down the fort until Burrow comes back — although his return is not guaranteed.
