Giants' Brian Daboll shares expectations for Jaxson Dart's first start

Pockets of New York Giants fans understandably are hoping that rookie Jaxson Dart will prove to be a franchise savior now that Dart has officially replaced veteran Russell Wilson as the club's starting quarterback.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll suggested outsiders should be realistic regarding what Dart will and won't achieve when the 0-3 Giants host the 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers this coming Sunday.

What Brian Daboll expects from Jaxson Dart vs. Los Angeles Chargers

"I expect him to prepare," Daboll said about Dart, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN. "We expect him to go out here and get better each time he plays. It's not always going to be perfect, but I do think that he has the right makeup and athleticism, and look, we're going to do everything we can do to help him be the best player. I know he is as well. It's not just on one person, it's on the entire team, and that's what we're going to do."

Dart largely looked ready for prime time as he completed 32-of-47 passes for 372 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions during the preseason. He also contributed six carries for 52 yards and an additional score over those games.

One concern about Dart is that he was evaluated for a concussion after he took an unnecessary hit when he could have avoided contact in the Giants' preseason finale. That play should serve as a reminder that Dart must be smart as it pertains to protecting the football while facing a Chargers side that, according to ESPN, is ranked eighth in the NFL in total defense (276.7 yards allowed per game).

Why New York Giants are ready to put Jaxson Dart in the lineup

A Wednesday report shared that Dart "has hit every benchmark coach Brian Daboll and the staff set in this process" leading up to the quarterback change. During his media availability, Daboll expanded on why he's comfortable with starting Dart against the unbeaten Chargers.

"I don't think any rookie quarterback is ever just ready to play," Daboll added during his comments. "You put him in there because you think that he's done enough to show you that he can go out there and compete, and he's done that every step of the way. And that's why I made the decision."

If this decision blows up in Daboll's face, it could result in his dismissal occurring before the ongoing season wraps up in early January.
