Rece Davis suggest home run hire for Florida if Billy Napier is fired

Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier may not be long for his job.

Napier now has a 20-22 record in three-and-a-quarter seasons in Gainesville, and his Gators are currently 1-3. They suffered a terrible home loss to South Florida in Week 2 and then lost to No. 4 LSU and No. 2 Miami concurrently.

With a brutal schedule looking ahead, Florida could realistically not win another game this season, which would certainly spell the end of Napier's time with the Gators. Heck, even if he pulls off an upset or two, the way his team looks right now, the base case scenario for Florida very well may be three or four wins.

It's not looking good for either party, but for Florida, getting the next head-coaching hire right in the likely post-Napier era is going to be important.

To that end, college football insider and analyst Rece Davis believes the Gators need to take a big swing.

Rece Davis thinks Curt Cignetti should be a target for Florida

Speaking on a recent edition of the "College GameDay Podcast," Davis believes Florida should try to poach Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti if and when Napier is let go.

"You know what I would do if I were a powerhouse program and I needed to make sure that I was going to win, and I didn't care about 15 years down the road or care about three years down the road or next year and winning for five years? I'd go try to pry Curt Cignetti out of Bloomington, Indiana. I don't care how old he is. I would go and try to hire that guy and say,'OK, let's get this fixed,'" Davis suggested (h/t OnSI)

Cignetti is 64, so he's absolutely on the back nine of his coaching career, but his results as a head coach speak for themselves. He turned around programs at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), Elon (part of the Coastal Athletic Association) and then James Madison before getting his big shot at Indiana — notably, a basketball school.

In Year 1 with the Hosiers, he went 11-2 and took them to the College Football Playoff. In Year 2, he's got Indiana at 4-0 and ranked No. 11 in the nation. The Hoosiers just blew out then-No. 9 Illinois, 63-10.

Cignetti should be Florida's top target if/when Napier is fired

Cignetti would be a home run hire for any school, let alone Florida. Davis said as much, though he did caution that at his age, Cignetti may not be interested in the pressure cooker that is Gainesville.

"At this stage of his career, he might not want to do it, and that would be perfectly acceptable. And in this day and age of college football, he went to the playoff last year. So, he might not want to. That's where I would start, because not just Florida, anybody else that finds itself in that situation I'd start there," Davis said.

All of this is a moot point if Napier somehow pulls off a miracle turnaround, but that seems highly unlikely. What is more likely is that Florida will have a new opening as head coach sooner rather than later, and Cignetti should be the top target.
