Montreal Canadiens get good and bad news following loss to Maple Leafs

The Montreal Canadiens lost 2-7 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a preseason game on Thursday. Afterwardlt, good and bad news emerged for the Habs.

The good news is that, despite the loss, rookie Ivan Demidov shone. He demonstrated that at 19 years old, age is just a number. He recorded a power-play assist to Patrik Laine after an individual play where he easily beat the Toronto defense. He had a visible offensive impact in 16 minutes on ice.

The bad news is that the team confirmed David Reinbacher's injury. He will be out for four weeks with a metacarpal fracture and will miss the start of the season.

Coach Martin St. Louis said he hopes the injury is not serious. “I don’t think it’s serious stuff, so I’m not too worried about it,” St. Louis said, via Sportsnet's Eric Engels.

How Demidov's strong performance and Reinbacher's injury will impact the Canadiens

Demidov could be integrated as a primary creator on the power play. His good management of time/space justifies giving him the puck more to enter the zone with control, attract defenders and enable Laine as a shooter.

He could also excel in five-on-five, starting with sheltered minutes. This means facing opposing second/third pairs to avoid the toughest matchups without delaying his progress.

The Russian should have a clear role as the second forward in the forechecking structure. This means more of a reader than a hunter, not to be left behind in the play. He could also fit perfectly with more freedom in zone entries, where he impacts the most, limiting turnovers near the blueline. He has everything to be key next season for the Canadiens.

On the other hand, Reinbacher's injury is a hard blow for both parties. It will reduce competition for the right defender position and delay his NHL development.

If managed well, integrating him gradually into the AHL could be ideal. His absence will affect Montreal by losing the reach and breakups of a right defenseman with a good stick. In five-on-five, the team will have to compensate with better gap management and support from the low center in zone exits.
