Packers reveal potential timeline for return of offensive weapon

The Green Bay Packers have to feel like they're searching for answers. They started the 2025 NFL season off strong, going 2-0, but their next two games have not been as impressive.

In fact, the Packers have looked bad at times over the past two weeks of football. They lost to the Cleveland Browns in Week 3, 13-10, and then played to a 40-40 tie against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4. Both games should have been wins for the Packers, on paper, at least.

So can the Packers turn it around after their bye week? Anything is possible, but the return of a big-play wide receiver like Christian Watson could certainly improve their chances.

On Tuesday, head coach Matt LaFleur said the Packers are considering opening that window after the bye week.

Watson has been recovering from an ACL injury that he suffered at the end of last season. He's been on the injured list for the first chunk of this season, but he's eligible to return in Week 6. The Packers can activate a practice window that will allow him to return to the field while they make a decision about activating him to the 53-man roster. If his return goes well, he'd obviously stay on. In fact, he could practice for three weeks and get back into he swing of things without counting against the roster number.

If there are setbacks, though, he'd go back to the injury list.

Packers could really use a player like Watson right now

There's just a disjointedness about the Packers right now. The defense looks great in one game, but the offense struggles. The next game, it's flipped. Special teams have been poor consistently, but consistency is not a good thing in that regard.

The thing is, this is a team that has the talent to be a Super Bowl contender, and they are 2-1-1 despite being one of the more banged-up teams in the NFL. Specifically, this is a defense that has the players to be elite, and the offense can be explosive as long as Jordan Love stays healthy and Josh Jacobs runs hard.

The one thing the Pack has been missing is a true deep threat. Rookie Matthew Golden has the speed, but he's still getting used to life in the NFL. A player like Watson could really take this thing to the next level for Green Bay, and he could be just the addition the Packers need to take the next step in the NFC.

The Packers won't want to rush him because that could ruin everything, but they have to be thrilled about the idea of getting Watson back sooner rather than later.
