Giants have 'strong interest' in Rangers exec for managerial role

After firing their manager, Bob Melvin, after two disappointing seasons in which they missed the playoffs, the San Francisco Giants will be among a handful of teams searching for a new skipper this winter.

Former Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was rumored to be their next manager after he and the Rangers mutually parted ways. Giants president Buster Posey ended those rumors when he firmly stated that the search for their next manager would be someone of his choosing.

Determined to find a manager who can pull together the talent on the roster, Posey may not go too far from the Bochy sphere of influence, as he could tap Ranger's special assistant to the general manager, Nick Hundley, for the job.

Giants show “strong interest” in Rangers special assistant Hundley

The Giants missed out on hiring Skip Schumaker when he came off the board after getting hired to fill the void left by Bochy.

However, the Giants could look to poach Hundley from their front office, with Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reporting that the Giants have “strong interest” in him. Hundley has been serving as the special assistant to general manager Ross Fenstermaker for the past few years and is no stranger to San Francisco, as he was Posey’s backup from 2017-18.

Hundley would be an interesting choice for manager

There's no doubt that Posey and the Giants will bring in Hundley for an interview, given his connection from his playing days, but more importantly, he was a part of the front of the front office that won the Rangers the 2023 World Series. Plucking someone from the Rangers would be a smart move for Posey.”

“I think we’re open,” Posey said earlier this week. “For me, age is somewhat irrelevant. … It’s somebody that’s going to be obsessive about the details, obsessive about work, obsessive about getting the most out of our players, getting the most out of our staff. Someone who will inspire confidence in our players on the field and also all the interactions that happen off the field as well.”

Having a catcher's mindset, which brings the old-school mentality of the game into the dugout, combined with his knowledge of how front offices work, Hundley could be what Posey is looking for to get the best out of the Giants' roster.
