Jets' Woody Johnson makes big statement about Aaron Glenn's future

First-year New York Jets  head coach Aaron Glenn has come under fire from members of the fan base and analysts after starting his tenure with seven straight losses.

Nevertheless, Jets owner Woody Johnson made it known while speaking with reporters at the NFL’s annual fall meeting on Tuesday that he's not thinking about moving on from Glenn just yet.

Has Woody Johnson lost faith in Aaron Glenn after seven games?

"I do. I do believe in Aaron," Johnson said about Glenn, per Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "I’ve known Aaron since 1996 [when] I was a fan. I’ve always been a fan of him. I see the way he handles the room. If I were a player, I’d respond to him because he’s the real deal. No B.S., no second agendas. What you’re hearing is the truth, and a lot of times players don’t get the truth."

Glenn played for the Jets as a defensive back long before he became a sought-after head-coaching candidate while serving as the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator. Although it doesn't seem that Glenn has lost the Jets' locker room during the team's losing streak, that could change depending on how he manages the team's unsettled quarterback situation.

Glenn benched Week 1 QB1 Justin Fields  in favor of backup Tyrod Taylor during New York's 13-6 home loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. As of Tuesday afternoon, it was unclear whether Fields or Taylor would start for the Jets' matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) on Oct. 26. However, per ESPN's Rich Cimini, Glenn is leaning toward starting Taylor, as Johnson has given him full reign over who he chooses as QB.

Has Woody Johnson seen enough of Justin Fields?

Taylor may be the best option currently on the Jets' roster, but he's also a 36-year-old journeyman who isn't a long-term answer for any club at this stage of his career. That said, ESPN stats show that Fields ended Week 7 ranked 31st out of 33 qualified players with a 31.8 adjusted QBR for the season.

"Well, it looks like he’s turning around parts of it," Johnson added during his comments about Glenn. "It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got. I mean, [Fields] has ability, but something just is not jiving. ... But if you look at any head coach of a quarterback like that, you’re going to see similar results if you were across the league."

In short, it sounds like Johnson wants Glenn to make a switch at quarterback for the Week 8 contest at Cincinnati's Paycor Stadium.
