Shortly after Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love outplayed Aaron Rodgers of the Pittsburgh Steelers to guide Green Bay to a 35-25 win that improved the Packers to 5-1-1 on Sunday night, Green Bay pass-rusher Micah Parsons crowned Love as "the successor."
While speaking with NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated after the victory, Love addressed what he learned from Rodgers while serving as the future Hall of Famer's primary backup from 2020 through the 2022 season.
"Oh man — so much, so much," Love said about how he benefited from having Rodgers as a mentor over the 26-year-old's first three pro campaigns. "I definitely wouldn’t be the player I am today without being able to watch him and learn from him, and just see a quarterback go out there and play at a super high level."
Outsiders may never know how much Rodgers truly wanted to get revenge against a Packers team that traded him to the New York Jets in the spring of 2023 when he took the Acrisure Stadium field on Sunday night. That said, he and Love have routinely had only positive things to say about the relationship they built when they were teammates for three seasons.
After Love completed 29-of-37 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsburgh, Rodgers said his former protege "played fantastic" in prime time.
"I knew what this week meant, and coming into it, what it was going to be," Love told Breer. "So, definitely, playing well going against A-Rod, and coming out with the win feels great. Just like you said, the time we spent together, everything I learned, it definitely is special for me to go out and be able to play well with him watching. That’s one of those things, I know he’s been watching, I know he’s studied some of the games we’ve played."
Rodgers revealed last week that he had previously reached out to Love because the Packers and Steelers had played a couple of common opponents this season. Whatever Rodgers told Pittsburgh defensive players about going up against Love, such pointers couldn't prevent the hosts from suffering a double-digit loss that dropped the Steelers to 4-3.
"He’s texted me that before — he’s seen some really good things from me, some great growth, and he’s happy for me," Love added about Rodgers. "We’ve got a pretty special relationship, and anytime I’m able to hear from him, get some good feedback and come out here and play well with him on the other side, it definitely felt good."
As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Love ninth among the betting favorites at +2200 odds to claim Most Valuable Player Award honors for the ongoing regular season. He'll look to produce another stellar outing when the Packers host the Carolina Panthers (4-4) on Nov. 2. On Monday, ESPN BET had Green Bay as an 11.5-point favorite for that contest.
