Adam Schefter won't shut down Joe Burrow-Jets talk, but it's a long shot

The NFL trade deadline (Nov. 4) came and went, yet that hasn’t stopped rumors and speculation about what’s to come in the offseason and years to follow.

General manager Darren Mougey and the New York Jets (1-7) supplied us with a vast majority of the excitement on Tuesday, dealing away star cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts and sending star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys. By doing so, they accumulated three first-round picks (2026, 2027 and 2027) and former high draft picks in wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.

Joe Burrow is a "prized asset"; Could Jets attempt a trade?

Given that the Jets now have five first-round selections over the next two years, many have begun to wonder what the front office will do with all those assets.

On Thursday during "Get Up," ESPN’s Mike Greenberg brought up the idea that they use some or all of them to acquire superstar quarterback Joe Burrow from the Cincinnati Bengals, and insider Adam Schefter didn’t exactly shut him down in response.

Why Joe Burrow would have no interest in the Jets

It’s not inconceivable to envision a scenario where Burrow becomes so frustrated with the Bengals' inability to build a strong enough team around him that he eventually asks to be traded.

However, if that ever were to happen, he would certainly want to land in a situation that gives him a better chance to compete for the Super Bowl, and New York is one of the few spots in the NFL that is worse than Cincinnati.

In fact, there might not be a worse situation in sports right now, as the Jets are poised to miss the playoffs for a 15th consecutive season, which would be the longest active postseason drought among all in the major North American professional sports leagues.

That aside, they just traded their two best defensive players, who are 25 and 27 years old. The draft capital is great, but Burrow, who turns 29 in December, is unlikely to have interest in joining a team that is overhauling its roster.

Garrett Wilson would be a nice weapon to work with, but he already has Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Why take such a step back when none of the other positions are much of an upgrade? Outside of the allure of playing in the mecca that is New York, nothing about joining the Jets will check any of Burrow’s boxes should he decide he wants out of Cincinnati.

Jets fans can continue to dream about the possibility of landing Burrow, but if they really want to change things, the best way to go is to draft and properly develop a quarterback of their own and use the rest of their picks to provide insulation around that guy.

With how loaded the 2027 draft class projects to be, this could be the best opportunity in a long time for the organization to truly return to relevance after more than a decade of darkness.
