CBB weekend winners, losers: Monster matchups take center stage

The second week of college basketball brought the electricity.

From marquee top-15 showdowns to an early Dunk of the Year candidate, here are this week’s winners and losers.

Winner: UConn Huskies

The spotlight on Saturday shone on No. 7 BYU and No. 3 UConn in TD Garden. The Huskies led by as many as 16 points before holding off the Cougars’ comeback attempt for an 86-84 win.

Three different players totaled 21 points for UConn, including senior Alex Karaban, who went 4-for-4 from three-point range. It appears head coach Dan Hurley has yet another elite squad that could give the Huskies their third national title in four years.

Loser: TCU Horned Frogs

TCU’s season got off to a disastrous start with a loss to New Orleans on opening day, and things didn’t get much better on Friday.

The Horned Frogs welcomed No. 6 Michigan to Fort Worth, Texas, and were in front for most of the game. However, they squandered that lead in the final seven minutes as the Wolverines won 67-63. TCU falls to 2-2 on the year, and head coach Jamie Dixon’s seat is warming up.

Winner: Arizona Wildcats

Arizona is off to the hottest start in the country. The Wildcats defeated No. 3 Florida to open the season, and they knocked off No. 15 UCLA on Friday.

While freshman Koa Peat has been the talk of the town, it was Anthony Dell’Orso who scored 20 points against the Bruins, while shooting 4-for-7 from behind the arc.

Arizona clearly has multiple weapons, and they are quickly making a case as the best team in the nation. The Wildcats will have a chance to add to their argument next week at No. 3 UConn.

Loser: Oakland Golden Grizzlies’ schedule

In the dictionary, the definition of “gauntlet” might as well be accompanied by a screenshot of Oakland’s first three games of the season. The Golden Grizzlies had to play No. 7 Michigan, No. 1 Purdue and No. 1 Houston, all on the road. They lost each game, of course, but that’s a lot for a small program out of the Horizon.

The good news? Oakland is already battle-tested, and outside of a contest with No. 17 Michigan State in December, the schedule is very manageable.

Winner: Baylor guard Cameron Carr

About a year ago, Cameron Carr elected to suddenly forgo the rest of his time at Tennessee and enter the transfer portal. Flash forward to 2025 and the redshirt sophomore has led Baylor to a 3-0 start.

Carr is averaging nearly 24 points per game, and he submitted his application for dunk of the year in the Bears’ most recent victory against Tarleton State.
