The NFL community was shocked to learn over the weekend that New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was in critical condition after being shot in Manhattan early on Sunday morning.
On Wednesday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has spoken with Boyd. Glenn also shared a promising update regarding Boyd's status.
"He’s going to come out of this thing really, really well," Glenn said about Boyd, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits, his wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits, and he’ll walk away from this just fine."
Boyd signed a one-year deal with the Jets in March, but he was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August because of a shoulder injury he suffered during the team’s Green and White scrimmage.
According to Joe Marino, Larry Celona and Jorge Fitz-Gibbon of the New York Post, Boyd, Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood and wide receiver Irvin Charles were at Sei Less Asian Fusion nightclub in Manhattan early Sunday morning when Boyd began to feel "uneasy" about the situation's "vibe." Ultimately, Boyd was left with a bullet lodged in his lungs after an altercation took place outside the club.
The Jets were off this past weekend, as they fell to 2-8 on the season via a 27-14 "Thursday Night Football" loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 13. As of Wednesday afternoon, the shooter remained at large.
It's unclear if Boyd, 29, will ever play a meaningful in-game snap for the Jets. Understandably, Glenn had other things on his mind when he reached out to the defensive back and special teamer.
"Once I heard about the situation, talking about Kris in general, the first thing I thought about was, he just had a kid, and I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid, and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind," Glenn added.
Glenn also said that he was comforted by the fact that Boyd sounded "really upbeat" during their chat.
The Jets next play at the 5-5 Baltimore Ravens this coming Sunday.
