As the conversation about Giannis Antetokounmpo wanting out of Milwaukee heats up, many are speculating that he will try to force a trade to New York. There's even a belief that if Antetokounmpo tells Milwaukee to only work with the Knicks, they will acquiesce no matter who else might be interested.
In a stroke of poor timing, Antetokounmpo suffered a right calf strain during Milwaukee's game on Wednesday night, making that something to monitor as the rumors intensify.
But an NBA superstar narrowing down his options to just one destination isn't much fun for fans hooked into the soap opera of it all.
So even though the Bucks will likely cater to Antetokounmpo's demands, especially if they believe his eventual departure is inevitable, there are a couple of intriguing teams that could join in on the fun if the former two-time MVP and NBA Finals MVP were put up for all bidders.
Assuming the Bucks wouldn't immediately dismiss the thought of trading Antetokounmpo within the division, Detroit could actually provide him with everything he wants.
The Pistons are a young team on the rise and play in a city with a similar cultural vibe to Milwaukee. Most importantly, Detroit currently sits as a legitimate contender at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Pairing Antetokounmpo with Cade Cunningham, who has been putting together an MVP-type season, could make the Pistons unstoppable. Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while Cunningham has averages of 27.6, 6.5 boards and 9.2 assists.
Detroit also has enough depth that there would still be enough around that two-headed monster for a playoff run.
Antetokounmpo may prefer a move to New York over San Antonio, but from a strictly basketball perspective, there may be no better option than the Spurs.
San Antonio has remained a contender despite Victor Wembanyama's absence (he last played on Nov. 14.) The Spurs are 15-6 as of Dec. 3, but a trade for Antetokounmpo would be both for the present and future.
Watching Wembanyama continue to develop into one of the most dominant players in the league alongside someone with a similar skillset who has already established a legendary legacy and led a team to a championship would be a dream for basketball fans. However, the two-way ability, size and length of both players would be a nightmare for opponents.
San Antonio would instantly become an impossible team to guard with Antetokounmpo and Wembanyama surrounded by guards like Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox, although one of them might have to be included in a package for Antetokounmpo.
So while everyone is busy being fixated on Antetokounmpo calling Madison Square Garden home, there are other attractive possibilities, too. The Lakers and Warriors need to be mentioned as well, but neither team has the flexibility to make a trade happen, which means a third dance partner would be required for a deal to be more than fantasy booking.
