The New York Jets had to turn to undrafted rookie quarterback and third-choice option Brady Cook during what became a frustrating 34-10 home loss to the Miami Dolphins that dropped the Jets to 3-10.
Cook was hardly a revelation in his regular-season debut, but the 24-year-old seems to be a popular figure among others in the locker room.
"He kind of demanded the attention of the huddle," Jets guard John Simpson said about Cook's performance, via Bridget Hyland of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "And that’s all you can ask for from a young guy like he is. He’s talented."
Jets Week 1 QB1 Justin Fields was inactive against the Dolphins because of a knee issue, and current starter Tyrod Taylor picked up a groin injury during the game. In his relief appearance, Cook completed 14-of-30 passes for 163 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
"Just his energy," Simpson added about Cook. "His demeanor when he comes in there, like no cackling, just straight to business."
Per Susanna Weir of the Jets' website, first-year head coach Aaron Glenn declined to say on Monday if Cook will practice as the Jets' starter ahead of their game at the Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4) this coming Sunday. At this point, Glenn likely has little to lose in giving Cook a shot.
The Jets have been eliminated from postseason contention and will likely release Fields this coming offseason after he was benched last month. Meanwhile, Taylor is a 36-year-old journeyman who isn't a long-term answer at the position.
"Supreme confidence," Jets running back Breece Hall said about Cook. "He takes every rep in practice like a pro."
On Monday, Glenn noted that Cook "had true command of the huddle with the players" after the first-year pro replaced Taylor during the Miami game. Giving Cook first-team practice reps ahead of this weekend would allow him to build needed chemistry with teammates ahead of what should become the first start of his young career.
