Losing Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers was bad enough for the New York Mets, but losing him over a total of $3 million was borderline humiliating.
And now that Pete Alonso has also left Queens, Steve Cohen's team will have to do plenty of heavy lifting to appease the fans.
With that in mind, they will reportedly look to bolster their bullpen with a familiar face. According to a report by MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Mets want to bring back Tyler Rogers.
“Mets are showing interest in Tyler Rogers, the one deadline pickup who performed superbly. Unsurprisingly, Rogers has a very strong market,” Heyman reported on X.
A seven-year hurler known for his unorthodox release, Rogers made 28 appearances in Queens last season.
He logged a respectable 2.30 ERA with 10 strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP over 27.1 innings of work.
His strikeout rate (17.6%) doesn't pop up, but he's great at making hitters put the ball on the ground and preventing hard contact.
Of course, keeping him around for the long run won't make up for the loss of one of the best -- if not the best -- relievers in all of baseball.
But with the Mets looking like the biggest losers of the Winter Meetings, they need to do something.
Steve Cohen preached patience, but after watching the team collapse in the second half of last season, the fan base may not want to hear anything about that right now.
