The AFC playoffs won't feature Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahomes.
A surprising 24-0 shutout home loss to the Baltimore Ravens eliminated the Cincinnati Bengals from playoff contention. It was an off game for the usually surgical Burrow, who completed just 25-of-39 passes for 225 yards, two interceptions, a pick-six and a passer rating of 58.2, the second-lowest of his career. That's why he made sure to take the blame following the loss.
"There’s no team in the NFL that would have won the game today if I was the quarterback," Burrow said, per Pro Football Talk.
The former No. 1 pick hadn't been shut out since a 2018 loss to Alabama while still at LSU. He owned it and admitted that he didn't play up to his standards.
"I think this is one of the worst games that I've played," Burrow admitted, per ESPN. "I'm honest with myself and my play, and I hold myself to a high standard, and today didn't come close."
It was a tough season for Zac Taylor's team again, and after two years of missing the playoffs, Burrow knows he has to do better.
"Bad football teams do losing things, and if you're wanting to compete for championships and be in the playoffs, then No. 1, your quarterback has to play better than I did today," added Burrow.
Even so, as bad as Burrow was in the loss, it's hard to put this on him. If anything, he rushed his way back to the field to try to help the same team that failed to protect him over and over again. The Bengals need to reevaluate their roster, and after so many years of inconsistency and slow starts, it might even be time to talk about a new head coach.
