The Kansas City Chiefs fell short this season, with the disappointment culminating in a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that officially ended Kansas City's impressive streak of postseason appearances.
The Chargers swept the Chiefs for the first time since 2013.
However, this wasn't much of a surprise, all things considered. The Chiefs didn't seem prepared for most of the season, and Chris Jones' latest blunder shows what went wrong with this team.
Following the loss, the star defensive tackle claimed that the team would still push for a playoff berth, not knowing that they had been knocked out of the race.
“We still have a fighting chance," Jones said, before a reporter let him know that they were eliminated, per Ari Meirov. "Are we out of the playoffs? We are? Ok.”
The fact that one of the veteran leaders and defensive anchors wasn't aware that this was an elimination game speaks volumes about the lack of preparation and sense of urgency from this team. Clearly, they weren't all on the same page.
Players like Jones seemed to get too complacent, which is something that often dooms winning teams.
From his no-effort play on Trevor Lawrence's game-winning touchdown in Week 5 to not playing up to his standards and steep salary, Jones, like most of the veterans and the coaching staff, let the team down over and over this season.
Jones' PFF grade (71.3) ranked 24th among eligible defensive linemen, even though he's the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league at $31.75M, per Spotrac.
This team is now looking at a long and winding offseason road to get back on track, and with Patrick Mahomes facing a significant injury, it might be time for a major shakeup. Clearly, the main thing they will need to address will be the leadership's shortcomings.
