Recent whispers have suggested that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson could experience a change of heart and part ways with first-year head coach Aaron Glenn next week even though Johnson strongly backed Glenn in October.
On Tuesday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated poured cold water over such speculation.
"Here’s the reality of the Jets’ situation," Breer wrote. "There has been no discussion at the upper reaches of the organization about moving on from Aaron Glenn after one year. And while some people would warn that Woody Johnson could quickly turn with another embarrassing Sunday at the office, I’d be pretty surprised if that happens."
Breer was referencing how the Jets' minus-107 point differential in December was the worst in NFL history for that month. The Jets are coming off four double-digit defeats, the last of which was a 42-10 home loss to the rival New England Patriots on Dec. 28.
Breer noted that "the biggest question being considered internally" involves "what the Jets should do at quarterback" during the upcoming offseason. According to at least one report, first-year Jets general manager Darren Mougey wanted to keep veteran Aaron Rodgers last winter. However, Glenn allegedly wanted to move on from the future Hall of Famer.
The Jets ultimately replaced Rodgers with Justin Fields. Gang Green will likely release Fields during the upcoming offseason after he was benched in November.
"Would the Jets make significant changes to the offensive staff this soon after Glenn fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks? To me, that is the sort of question to consider," Breer continued. "And the plan is for Glenn to be in place in 2026 to answer it. As it stands now, I think it’ll mean changes around OC Tanner Engstrand, with perhaps some more quarterbacking infrastructure, rather than replacing him."
Some outsiders see Johnson as the biggest reason the Jets are in the middle of the longest active postseason drought among the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA and MLS (15 years). It sounds as if Johnson still believes Glenn and Mougey are the right individuals to spark a turnaround for the woebegone franchise.
