For an article published on Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed that "some folks around the league have wondered" whether Buffalo Bills ownership "might grow impatient with" head coach Sean McDermott if a team that features reigning Most Valuable Player Josh Allen fails to make a run to Super Bowl LX.
In his weekly mailbag, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated touched upon the short-term futures of McDermott and Bills general manager Brandon Beane.
"You never say never, and certainly that wouldn’t be a great look, given that the AFC is wide open this year," Breer wrote about what could happen if the Bills suffer a loss during the AFC portion of the playoffs. "But I don’t think it’s been part of the internal conversation."
A 2018 first-round draft pick, Allen has famously gone 0-4 against the Kansas City Chiefs in playoff games, and he has yet to play on a Super Bowl Sunday. Of course, Allen won't have to worry about the Chiefs and injured star quarterback Patrick Mahomes this time around. Additionally, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens may also fail to qualify for the playoffs.
Meanwhile, individuals such as ESPN's Dan Graziano have mentioned that "the Bills will be easily the most playoff-tested squad in" the AFC postseason field that will also feature the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers.
Thus, some understandably have suggested that McDermott and Beane could be facing Super Bowl-or-bust situations regarding their jobs. However, Breer indicated that's not necessarily the case.
"Do the Bills eventually get to the point where they feel they need to act with urgency, with a generational talent at quarterback? Let’s see how the playoffs play out," Breer continued. "I don’t think it’s likely yet, but it’s not like there isn’t precedent for it."
As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Bills tied for third among the betting favorites at +550 odds to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LX.
