Recent stories have suggested that the Cleveland Browns and head coach Kevin Stefanski will part ways as soon as when the NFL's "Black Monday" arrives early next week.
According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Stefanski may not have to wait long to find his next gig if he wants to continue serving as a head coach at the highest level in 2026.
Per Raanan, Stefanski "will attract serious interest from" the New York Giants if he becomes available early into the offseason.
Whispers linking Stefanski with the Giants have grown louder since Christmas Day. Earlier in the week, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler mentioned that "Stefanski might be the strongest retread candidate in the eyes of many" and that "the Giants would be an ideal fit" for the 43-year-old. On Friday, Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com noted that Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch haven’t hired a proven head coach since they picked Tom Coughlin in 2004.
Stefanski was an advertised offensive guru when he accepted the Cleveland gig in 2020, and he has since won NFL Coach of the Year Award honors on two occasions. It's thought that the Giants will want a proven offensive mind to work with 2025 first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart, who is expected to remain the club's starting quarterback through the offseason.
"He clearly can coach," Slater said about Stefanski. "...He also is a well-regarded offensive mind and quarterback molder — something the Giants could use, as they build around Jaxson Dart in the years to come."
The Browns have gone 7-26 under Stefanski since he became a two-time Coach of the Year Award winner, and Cleveland is about to complete a fourth losing season in five years. However, it remains unclear how involved Stefanski was in the decision to trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson and hand Watson a fully guaranteed five-year, $230M contract in March 2022. That move ultimately set the Browns back for several years.
Additionally, Giants ownership has yet to confirm that general manager Joe Schoen will remain in his role. According to Raanan, "multiple sources who spoke with the Giants about potential candidates came away from recent conversations believing that Schoen 'is coming back' as the general manager despite a 6-27 record over the past two seasons."
