Russell Wilson may have cost himself, Giants by revealing undisclosed hamstring tear

New York Giants veteran quarterback Russell Wilson went 0-3 across three September starts before he was benched in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart.

While speaking with reporters on Monday, Wilson revealed that he suffered a torn hamstring shortly before he passed for 450 yards and three touchdowns in the Giants' 40-37 Week 2 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Russell Wilson kept injury quiet?

"You know, I played that [Week 2] game, you know, I tore my hamstring on Friday in practice — the last play of practice," Wilson explained, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "And I had a grade two [tear]. I couldn’t tell anybody. I had to go and play on it just because I knew the circumstance. I had to play on it, no matter what. I actually ended up going to the Dallas Mavericks' facility, training. And, you know, kept it quiet, just trying to get treatment on it and just knowing that I probably couldn’t run from the goal line to the 10-yard line if I wanted to, but I feel like, you know, I got to play this game."

Wilson signed a one-year contract to join the Giants in March 2025, and he was later announced as the club's Week 1 QB1 after Big Blue acquired Dart on the opening night of last year's draft. However, fellow backup Jameis Winston and not Wilson started a pair of November games that Dart missed with a concussion after the Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll. Wilson is not expected to re-sign with the Giants.

What revelation could mean for Russell Wilson, Giants

According to Florio, a source said that Wilson's revelation "won’t make other teams more likely to offer him a roster spot for 2026." The 37-year-old may have also landed the Giants in hot water since outsiders didn't know about his injury back in September.

NFL rules require teams to list all "reportable injuries" on practice reports, "even if the player takes all the reps in practice." In the past, the NFL has punished clubs via fines for violating that policy.

Thus, it appears Wilson did himself and the Giants no favors, less than 24 hours after the team finished the season with a record of 4-13.
