New York Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly decided to retain first-year head coach Aaron Glenn before the Jets ended their disastrous season by suffering a blowout 35-8 loss to the Buffalo Bills that dropped Gang Green to 3-14 this past Sunday.
While speaking with media members as they cleaned out their lockers on Monday, multiple Jets players made it known they still believe Glenn is the right coach to lead the club's needed turnaround.
"I don’t know if y’all saw it at the beginning of the year, but those games were close, and we were in them," Jets left guard John Simpson explained, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "Finish, I feel like we were missing this past year. I believe in the coaches here full-heartedly. It would be an honor to be a part of something like this next year."
Pockets of Jets fans have taken to social media and to local sports-talk radio programs to call for Johnson to dismiss Glenn after the team was largely non-competitive as it suffered five double-digit losses to end the season. In the process, the Jets reclaimed sole possession of the longest active playoff drought among the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA and MLS at 15 years.
"I understand the emotion that they have with the organization," Jets defensive tackle Harrison Phillips said about members of the team's fan base. "You can’t fault 2022, 2020, you can’t fault that on any of the new people who are in this organization. As difficult as it might be because they are scarred from past traumas, I know how, when you talk about trauma, PTSD, that’s actually real with how much our fans support us. For 15 years, I can get your frustrations, but for us new people to this organization, it’s our first year, and you gotta give us some grace."
The 2025 Jets became the first team since the league started keeping track of interceptions back in 1933 to complete a full season without tallying a single pick. On Monday, Jets safety Andre Cisco said the players "are all responsible" for the team's defense making unwanted history.
"Lack of words on that, to be honest with you," Cisco continued. "It is hard to fathom that we had no interceptions. But I know guys were thinking about it. I know guys are conscious of it throughout the season."
Jets center Josh Myers added that he believes Glenn is installing the right culture as the club's head coach. For better or for worse, it seems that Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey will remain in charge of the Jets' latest rebuild through the offseason.
