Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes makes big decision early into injury rehab

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the early days of his recovery from the procedure he underwent on Dec. 15 to repair the torn ACL and torn LCL he suffered the previous day.

Mahomes has made a big decision regarding how he will rehab during the winter months.

Patrick Mahomes will "most likely" be here during his rehab

"First of all, he’s doing great for just being three weeks out or so," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently said about Mahomes, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "He’ll go ahead and most likely stay up here for the majority of the time rehabbing. He and [Chiefs assistant athletic trainer Julie Frymyer], she’s the person who does all that [rehab physical therapy], and so he has a lot of trust in her, and he’s been just in there grinding."

Back in September, a piece published by GoPrincetonTigers.com noted that Mahomes previously credited Frymyer "with allowing him to play" in Super Bowl LVII in February 2023 when the signal-caller was dealing with an ankle issue.

Patrick Mahomes hitting rehab hard after Christmas

Multiple reports ahead of Christmas indicated that Mahomes wants to start the Chiefs' 2026 regular-season opener this coming September. Living legend Tom Brady knows what it takes to come back from a torn ACL and MCL, and Brady advised Mahomes to "get through rehab mode as fast as possible" so that the three-time Super Bowl champion can then "get back to training mode."

"I think they’ll just continue 'till we get started again," Reid added during his comments. "Not that he won’t take a break here or there, but right now, he’s in that early process where you’ve got to really hit it hard. And, you know, it’s not necessarily a fun thing to do every day. The important thing is that you show up, and that you keep coming, coming back for more, and he’s been doing that."

The Chiefs don't yet know if star tight end Travis Kelce will return to the club or retire as he and entertainment superstar Taylor Swift plan their wedding that reportedly will take place in June 2026. One wonders if Mahomes' status around that time will have any impact on Kelce's decision.
