USMNT star Weston McKennie faces major decision as 2026 World Cup looms

Several of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s brightest stars are thriving with their clubs as the 2026 World Cup looms. Those players must stay sharp as head coach Mauricio Pochettino evaluates his options for the tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

One of them is versatile midfielder Weston McKennie, who was not part of the USMNT’s recent 5–1 victory over Uruguay. The 27-year-old should be a regular starter for the national team, even in Pochettino’s new 3-4-2-1 (or 3-4-3) formation. That said, McKennie faces a major offseason decision that he should resolve before the competition begins.

Weston McKennie has not renewed his contract with Juventus

The American is following a familiar script to his past seasons with the “I Bianconeri." Needing to gain the trust of manager Lucian Spalletti, McKennie has worked his way up from being a bit contributor to one of the best players on the team once again.

And there have been plenty of highlights for the Fort Lewis, Washington, native this season. McKennie made his 200th appearance for the club in early December and already has two Champions League goals.

As of now, McKennie’s contract with Juventus is set to expire in June 2026, following an extension he signed in 2024. Negotiations for a new long-term deal have stalled, and no agreement has been reached.

His uncertain future has sparked speculation that he might move this summer to Major League Soccer, where he could earn a lucrative contract at home. While this would mean stepping away from one of Europe’s top leagues, it wouldn’t necessarily affect his readiness for the World Cup.

The Serie A season concludes in late May, so even if McKennie transfers to MLS, he should remain sharp leading into the tournament. Ideally, he would resolve his club situation soon, as he is still fully capable of competing at the highest level in world soccer.
