Texas Tech lands former Auburn WR Malcolm Simmons in transfer portal

The Texas Tech Red Raiders made a name for themselves in the transfer portal this season, and that's not going to stop now that they've gotten a taste of success.

Frankly, it should be expected that head coach Joey McGuire and his brain trust push even harder now that they've seen how the portal can change their fortunes and raise their status in the college football world. As such, it's no surprise that Texas Tech has already brought in a great portal class this offseason, and it just got better on Monday.

Malcom Simmons is a former four-star recruit from Alexander City, Alabama. He decided to stay near home and play his first two seasons of college ball for the Auburn Tigers, but he hit the transfer portal after Auburn's disappointing 2025 season ended.

Per On3, Simmons has found a new college home, and that home is in Lubbock, Texas.

Simmons was ranked as the No. 29 wideout in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports, and he did get playing time as a freshman on The Plains.

In his first season, he caught 40 catches for 451 yards and three touchdowns. This past season, he caught just 25 catches for 457 yards and two touchdowns, but again, Auburn really struggled. The Tigers were second-to-last in the SEC with just 197.1 passing yards per game, so Simmons' numbers suffered as a result.

Still, Texas Tech has to be excited, because the Red Raiders just landed a player who can do this:

Texas A&M, Arkansas and Kentucky were also in the running for Simmons' transfer-portal commitment. He joins a Texas Tech transfer-portal class that's currently ranked No. 8 in the country.
