Yankees awaken from offseason slumber in trade with Marlins

For the second time in a week, the Miami Marlins have traded from their rotation depth. This time, the New York Yankees are the beneficiaries.

According to Jack Curry from YES Network, the Yankees are acquiring pitcher Ryan Weathers for a quartet of prospects. Insider Craig Mish reported that the Marlins will receive outfielders Brendan Jones and Dillon Lewis and infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus.

The 26-year-old Weathers had a breakout campaign in 2024, posting a 3.63 ERA and a 1.177 WHiP over 86.2 innings for the Marlins, striking out 80 batters with 24 walks. He followed that performance with a solid 3.99 ERA and a 1.278 WHiP over 38.1 innings, striking out 37 batters with 12 walks.

Yankees taking a significant gamble with Ryan Weathers

Injuries have been an ongoing concern for Weathers. He missed three months in 2024 due to a strained left index finger. A left forearm strain and a left lat strain held Weathers to just eight starts in 2025. He has the potential to be a middle-of-the-rotation starter if he can stay healthy.

Weathers' injury history should also be a concern for the Yankees. Their pitching staff battled injuries in 2025 as ace Gerrit Cole missed the entire season due to Tommy John surgery and Luis Gil missed the first four months due to a strained right lat. Cole and Clarke Schmidt, who also underwent elbow surgery last year, are expected back after the All-Star break.

Weathers is more than a potential lottery ticket for the Yankees. He is a cost-efficient depth option, earning $1.35M in his first year of arbitration and is under team control for two more years. As their payroll is already over $300M and the Yankees have significant holes to fill, Weathers' modest salary may be as much of a benefit as what he can provide on the mound.
