The Denver Broncos' celebration was short-lived after their 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills in overtime.
During his postgame news conference, Broncos head coach Sean Payton revealed Bo Nix was out for the rest of the season after suffering a fractured ankle on the second-to-last offensive play in overtime.
With Nix out, Denver plans to start backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham in the AFC championship against the winner of Sunday's divisional round contest against the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.
Payton gave a bizarre synopsis of his interaction with Nix after the game. The second-year quarterback told Payton he suffered an ankle injury that required surgery during his time at Auburn and had another similar injury in high school.
Payton told Nix he wouldn't have drafted him had he known of his history with ankle issues.
"He's such a strong, faith-based guy, sitting in the hallway with his family," Payton said of Nix. "And I went over, and we're all talking to him, and you know he knows, you know, that God's got a plan for him.
"And yet he said he had one in high school. And then he said he had one at Auburn, and I said, 'I didn't realize that I said if I don't know that I wouldn't have drafted you.'"
It wasn't clear if Payton was using gallows humor or not. Still, Payton's choice of words was odd after Nix's season-ending injury.
Here is #Broncos HC Sean Payton delivering one of the most stunning, jaw-dropping announcements I’ve seen in a while: Bo Nix is out for the year.

Denver selected Nix with the No. 12 pick in the draft. Given the importance of the pick, one would think Payton would have done his homework on the medical history of Nix.
Nix was instrumental in the Broncos' success this season. He threw for 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during the regular season, helping the team earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Nix played well on Saturday, throwing for 279 yards, three touchdowns and one interception as the Broncos beat Josh Allen and the Bills.
However, the Broncos are now aware of Nix's issue with lower-body injuries. It will be a concern for Denver when the quarterback returns to the field in 2026 and beyond.
