New England Patriots legend Tom Brady allegedly will remain neutral regarding his rooting interests when the Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX this coming Sunday.
That doesn't mean he and second-year Patriots quarterback Drake Maye are strangers this winter.
While speaking with reporters during the "Super Bowl XL Opening Night" festivities on Monday, Maye was asked to reveal the best advice he has received from Brady over the past couple of years.
"I’ve met Tom a few times, and one of the best things he said is there’s no shortcuts to it," Maye explained, per Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "There’s no shortcuts to putting in the work. The proof’s in the pudding. Knowing that the shortcuts that people can try to take, it’s not worth it. Get the most out of what you put into it. He’s been great at that, and he obviously showed that throughout his career."
Last offseason, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and first-year head coach Mike Vrabel asked Maye to study how Brady played in McDaniels' offense during the club's dynastic run that involved New England winning six Super Bowl titles. Part of Maye's summer homework also involved improving as a leader, a task he warmly embraced en route to becoming an MVP finalist.
Before and during New England's latest journey that ended with a trip to the Super Bowl, Maye made it known he wanted "to be myself" instead of "the greatest of all time." He echoed that take on Monday evening.
"I appreciate his greatness," Maye added about Brady, according to Jacob Camenker of USA Today. "What he did for my team that I play for now, what he did for football, what he's done for my position that I play. Just respect for how he played the game, how he wanted to win so bad, how he carried his teammates, how he led his teammates, how he approached the sport. [I want to] pay respect to him, but not try to be him and just try to be myself."
As of late Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to list the Patriots as 4.5-point underdogs for Super Bowl LX. Guiding New England to an upset win over Seattle would be quite a Brady-like achievement for the 23-year-old signal-caller who is still in the early stages of a promising career.
