While serving as head coach of the New York Giants, new Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Brian Daboll developed a reputation for in-game outbursts caught by television cameras and for "exploding" on certain individuals behind the scenes.
Daboll will now be tasked with helping Titans quarterback Cam Ward improve as a second-year pro. Ward seemingly isn't worried about Daboll's personality in the early days of their working relationship.
"I like that he is a fiery coach," Ward recently said about Daboll, per Jim Wyatt of the Titans' website. "He is going to get on my a-- when he needs to, and he is going to hold me to a high standard. And that's the standard I want to be held to."
The first overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, Ward went 3-14 as a starter during a campaign that featured the in-season firing of head coach Brian Callahan. Pro Football Reference stats show that Ward ended Week 18 ranked 38th in the NFL among qualified players with a 33.1 adjusted QBR and 38th with an 80.2 passer rating. In total, he passed for 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The Titans hired former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as their new head coach. Ward seems to understand that Saleh and Daboll won't be afraid to speak their minds when they feel the 23-year-old isn't following their instructions.
"I don't need it, but I want it," Ward said about likely getting some tough love from Daboll this coming spring and summer. "And it's not for my sake, because I know what I want to be – I don't need a coach to pat me on the back or cuss me out. I want a coach like coach Daboll, who is going to be the same each and every day. He is going to let me know the real, and I just have to respond."
Both Saleh and Daboll were working elsewhere when the Titans drafted Ward. How Ward responds to what may prove to be inevitable "tough love" moments could determine whether or not this arranged marriage works out well or becomes a hot mess for the Titans.
