Sam Darnold wasn't out for vengeance or vindication. He didn't want to convince anyone but himself.
Now, he's led the Seattle Seahawks to their second Super Bowl win in franchise history.
He did so while becoming the first quarterback from the class of 2018 to hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy, ahead of Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson or Baker Mayfield.
Given his rollercoaster of a career, not many people would've seen that coming. However, he's not like most people, as he proved with some words of wisdom after winning the biggest game of his career.
“As long as you believe in yourself, anything is possible,” Darnold said, as shared by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
As simple as that may sound, it should mean a lot coming from someone who's been through what he's been through.
From entering the league as the No. 3 pick to being labeled a bust and bouncing around multiple teams as a backup, not many people would've been able to pull this off.
Not once did he complain or blame his teams or coaches. He got to work and kept getting better after every team turned its back on him.
Even last offseason, the Minnesota Vikings chose an unproven rookie coming off a major knee injury, J.J. McCarthy, over Darnold, who had just led them to a 14-win season.
Darnold deserves plenty of credit for throwing for over 4,000 yards and helping wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba have a dominant season. He deserves even more flowers for taking care of the football in the playoffs and leading his team all the way.
But above everything else, Darnold deserves the hat tip of all hat tips for never allowing the outside noise to dictate his fate. He took control of his destiny, even when everybody else stopped believing.
