In theory, the Boston Red Sox received more than salary relief by trading corner infielder Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
Pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison were expected to play a part in the present and future of the Red Sox pitching staff. Prospect James Tibbs had spent time at both outfield corners and first base while showing his impressive power potential. Pitching prospect Jose Bello was regarded as a work in progress, but his plus slider, developing fastball and changeup made him a worthwhile lottery ticket.
Instead, the Red Sox have moved on from three of those four players. Tibbs was included in the trade that brought pitcher Dustin May to Boston at the 2025 trade deadline. Hicks was sent to the White Sox in what can best be called a salary dump. Harrison left the organization on Monday, traded to the Brewers as part of the return for infielder Caleb Durbin.
Although Bello was not included in the Red Sox's top 30 prospects at the end of 2025, he still showed his potential. Bello pitched his way to A-ball, although he struggled with his command in the Carolina League. He posted a solid 2.75 ERA and a 1.204 WHiP over his 55.2 innings over three stops, striking out 61 batters with 24 walks.
As Bello will turn 21 years old in May and has just 23.1 innings of experience in full-season ball, he is a long way from Boston. However, he has flashed his potential and could prove to be an asset. If he develops as hoped, the Red Sox may have a piece for their future after all.
