Maple Leafs rejected a one-for-one trade offer from the Oilers?

The Edmonton Oilers have been looking to move Andrew Mangiapane for months now to no avail. Those talks cooled in recent weeks during the Winter Olympics, though a report from insider David Pagnotta on Monday reignited the chatter, raising hope that GM Stan Bowman can find the veteran winger a new home before the March 6 trade deadline.

Several teams have been linked to Mangiapane throughout the process, though one suitor that has drawn attention — Toronto, thanks to his Calgary connection with GM Brad Treliving — doesn’t appear to be all that interested. Insider Nick Kypreos revealed on his latest trade board that the Toronto Maple Leafs were approached with the idea of a one-for-one swap for Matias Maccelli, but that wasn’t something they were willing to do.

Kypreos wrote:

“It just hasn’t worked out between the Oilers and Mangiapane, and it’s not believed that his no-trade clause would get in the way of much, as he also would like to try it somewhere else… The Oilers were prepared to send Mangiapane to Toronto for Matias Maccelli, but the feeling is the Leafs weren’t too interested in it.”

The 29-year-old Mangiapane is in just the first year of a two-year, $7.2 million contract he signed to go to Edmonton this summer. On the other hand, Maccelli, 25, is a pending RFA in the third and final year of the three-year, $10.275 million extension he originally signed with the Mammoth in 2023.

Mangiapane has struggled mightily to the tune of 12 points (six goals, six assists) produced across 49 games in his first season as an Oiler, while Maccelli has tallied 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) through 46 games played in year one in Toronto.

Earlier in the season, a change-of-scenery swap between Mangiapane and Maccelli would have made a lot of sense. However, after a slow start, the latter has started to find his game in recent months with his new team, likely putting an end to that possibility. If the Finnish winger continues to click alongside William Nylander and John Tavares, he could be in line for a new contract to stay with the Maple Leafs beyond 2025–26.

At this point, if the Oilers are going to move Mangiapane before the deadline, it’s likely to be either as a pure cap dump or by throwing him in as part of a larger trade to help balance any salary they’re acquiring and stay under the cap.
