Five college basketball head coaches who will be hot commodities this offseason

The head-coaching carousel in men's college basketball will start to pick up steam in less than two weeks, as postseason conference tournaments conclude and teams not playing in the 2026 NCAA Tournament or the NIT will head into the offseason.

Some teams that are not participating in the postseason beyond their league tourneys could make a head-coaching change. This will provide opportunities for up-and-coming mid-major head coaches to potentially make a move to the high-major level. These five will be in high demand.

Casey Alexander, Belmont Bruins

2025-26 record: 26-5 overall, 16-4 in Missouri Valley Conference

In all seven seasons leading Belmont, Alexander has won at least 20 games. He's claimed 25-plus victories in four campaigns with the Bruins. His overall record at Belmont is an impressive 166-59.

Jerrod Calhoun, Utah State Aggies

2025-26 record: 24-5 overall, 14-4 in Mountain West Conference

In his first campaign at Utah State, Calhoun led the Aggies to a 26-8 mark. In season two, Utah State is performing well again under Calhoun. The Aggies are 50-13 overall during his tenure. Between his head coaching stops at Fairmont State, Youngstown State and Utah State, Calhoun is a combined 292-156.

Bryan Hodgson, South Florida Bulls

2025-26 record: 21-8 overall, 13-3 in American Conference

In Hodgson's first campaign as South Florida's head coach, the Bulls are in an excellent position to win at least a share of the American Conference's regular-season title. Hodgson guided Arkansas State to a 45–28 record over two seasons before becoming the Bulls head coach.

Josh Schertz, Saint Louis Billikens

2025-26 record: 26-3 overall, 14-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference

Schertz will likely be the most popular head-coaching candidate this upcoming offseason. Saint Louis is No. 25 in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll. In 13 seasons leading Division II Lincoln Memorial, Schertz was 337-69 before going 66–40 in three seasons at Indiana State.

Travis Steele, Miami (Ohio) RedHawks

2025-26 record: 30-0 overall, 17-0 in Mid-American Conference

Steele had a 70–50 overall record over four seasons at Big East Conference school Xavier before getting fired. Now in Steele's fourth campaign with the RedHawks, No. 19 Miami (Ohio) won 25 games last season and is one of the feel-good stories of the 2025-26 campaign.
