Why Jets reportedly made this Breece Hall decision ahead of franchise-tag deadline

Throughout the offseason, numerous reports made it known that the New York Jets did not intend to let running back Breece Hall reach free agency and would instead retain his rights for 2026 via either the franchise tag or the transition tag before Tuesday's deadline to use such an asset arrived at 4 p.m. ET.

The Jets didn't need to wait until the afternoon hours to make a final call on Hall's status.

Jets weren't willing to lose Breece Hall

According to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo, the Jets are placing the franchise tag on Hall for the 2026 season. He will be set to earn roughly $14.293M while on the one-year tag unless he doesn't sign it and is willing to forfeit money by skipping games.

Hall and the Jets will now have until July 15 to speak about a multiyear contract.

Hall seemingly reacted to the news shortly after it was announced.

Could Breece Hall play for a team other than the Jets in 2026?

This past December, Hall raised some eyebrows when he admitted that the Jets reclaiming sole possession of the longest active postseason drought among the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA and MLS (15 years) "definitely starts to weigh on you." That comment led some to believe that the 2022 second-round draft pick could play hardball if he was tagged by the Jets.

Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith mentioned that the Jets could speak with other clubs about a trade involving Hall if he isn't keen on signing a long-term extension with the club. However, it sounds like such a scenario is unlikely at this stage of the offseason.

"The transition tag was originally New York’s preferred route," SNY NFL insider Connor Hughes shared about the Jets' handling of Hall's status. "There were a number of teams that let it be known they planned to make a run at the RB with deals beyond $11.3M. The Jets then pivoted off of transition to franchise: The only way to make sure Hall wasn’t going anywhere."

While the Jets would not have received draft-pick compensation if they used the transition tag and then didn't match an offer for Hall, they would be due two first-round draft picks if another team signs him to an offer sheet and the Jets don't match it.

In short, it sounds like Hall will be tasked with trying to help the Jets end their playoff drought for at least one more season.
